Although he was born in one of the bluegrass capitals of his era (New York City!), it wasn’t until college that David discovered the vast spectrum of American music that lived beyond classic rock. His friend Max introduced him to The Byrds, The Louvin Brothers, Gram Parsons, Emmylou Harris, John Prine, Iris Dement, John Hartford, and other great country rock and Americana singers and bands. A couple years later, in Brooklyn, David met singer/songwriter and budding mandolinist Sara Bouchard, with whom he dove into bluegrass, blues and old-time jazz. The two co-founded the genre-bending Brooklyn band Union Street Preservation Society, which would go on to record three albums and perform up and down the east coast with Greensky Bluegrass, Andy Statman, and many other great acts. David couldn’t play like Doc Watson or Tony Rice, but his voice, rhythm guitar backbone, energy, curation and uncanny memory for song lyrics provided the glue for the multi-talented group.
One fortuitous Saturday morning, Dave reunited with his childhood friend Roy, who stumbled upon USPS’s monthly residency bluegrass brunch at an Italian restaurant. Coincidentally, multi-instrumentalist Roy had also found his way to bluegrass over the years. Dave introduced Roy to Max, and the three would soon form best-friend-trio Van Horn, known for its impeccable harmonies and spirit.
After moving from Brooklyn to Schenectady in 2019, David quickly became a warm face and welcomed voice at jams in Troy, Albany, Schenectady, Hudson and elsewhere upstate. He met Bruce Thompson at the monthly Rustic Barn jam in Speigletown, and after a series of promising house jams and some harmony tightening, David and Bruce formed UNKEN BREW.

Bruce ThompsonGuitar/Dobro & Vocals
Bruce loves sharing acoustic music with a new generation of artists and audiences! He started playing music in elementary school, first on violin and later on guitar and dobro. Influenced by the music of jazz greats such as Charlie Parker, Mingus, and Charlie Byrd, and with a natural affinity for improvisation, Bruce moved to Boston to attend the Berklee College of Music, earning a degree in Jazz Composition. With a background in acoustic folk and bluegrass, as well as jazz and blues, he worked adeptly across genres playing throughout Boston and the northeast. His musical travels brought him to Saratoga county, where he raised his family and currently lives. In addition to performing, Bruce teaches at the legendary folk club Caffè Lena in Saratoga Springs, runs Wernick Bluegrass jam classes and camps, and is a fixture in the local Bluegrass community.
Bruce loves collaborating with David to work up fresh twists on familiar tunes, as well as spirited traditional arrangements and original songs. UNKEN BREW will have you tapping your toes and singing along!

Sam KatzMandolin & Vocals
A recent transplant to Vermont, Sam Katz first encountered bluegrass music in 2000 after moving to Nashville for a teaching position. A chance evening at the Ryman Auditorium introduced him to the Del McCoury Band and Ralph Stanley. “I had never seen a mandolin before that night!” he recalls. Soon thereafter he began playing, studying, and later, attending jams. “The jams, especially Nashville’s Full Moon Picking Parties, opened up a new world for me — socially, creatively, and joyfully.” Sam left Tennessee for work in Ohio and South Korea, and found folks to play with wherever he went. Upon returning to Nashville in 2013 he began to play with bands and was a regular in the jam scene. “A bluegrass jam is an astonishing thing — only together, working with all musicians at various levels, does it work. It’s community, joy, and beauty.” He also taught with Guitars 4 Vets for a few years, a program which provides guitars and lessons to veterans with PTSD and traumatic brain injuries, and with other instructors, started the jam for program grads and an online group for instructors to share methods and materials. Sam is ecstatic to find such a vibrant music scene here in the Northeast. “Music has allowed me to make friends all over the world, and the welcome I’ve received by the community here has been wonderful.” Sam has studied with Nate Lee, Dave Isaacs, Deanie Richardson, and Barry Mitterhoff. When not playing, Sam is an avid reader and is trying to learn Portuguese.
